Duke had not looked so happy to be trekking into the woods in -- yeah, basically ever. He wasn't anti-woods by any means on a regular day, but the fact that he was heading into said woods, camping gear on his back, with a woman he ~~loved~~ really really liked and every intention of hanging out and doing all sorts of fun, sexy activities through at least tomorrow afternoon was definitely making this his favorite trip into the wilderness ever.

(That wasn't really a high bar. But still.)

If he was humming a sexy little tune as they walked, well. Could you blame him?

Octavia was always pretty happy to head into the woods. Even with how uncharacteristically relaxed she'd perhaps appeared earlier today, there was still a pretty obvious shift in the way she carried herself as soon as they were actually in the preserve, walking on uneven terrain with the trees stretching tall above them.

But there was no denying she seemed particularly happy to be here today. With him and their plans, and her backpack stuffed with essentials.

"Do I want to know what you're humming?"

"Something I wish I'd remembered last night," Duke said, grin firmly in place. "You ever listen to any Fiona Apple in your music store days?"

Octavia frowned a bit as she tried to remember. "A little, maybe?"

She's listened to a lot of music at the store, but completely at random. A lot of the names hadn't stuck with her even though she might recognize songs.

"She's good," Duke said. "Had a, uh. Friend who used to put her on any time we hooked up." He cleared his throat and sang a chorus:

"Give me the first taste
Let it begin -- heaven cannot wait forever
Darling, just start the chase -- I'll let you win
But you must make the endeavor."

As Octavia listened, she couldn't help but think how she would've had to ban him from singing if she'd actually tried to resist the pollen all week long.

"Okay, that does fit," she said. "Also that alone would've been grounds for not waiting 'til today."

"Right? It's some sexy stuff." Duke huffed a laugh. "Even accounting for how this week would make a fork in a garbage disposal sound sexy."

Okay, that earned him a snort as Octavia glanced over.

(Looking at him seemed much easier today than it had for a bit last night. Now it was just a pure delight.)

"How?"

"You know," Duke said, blushing faintly. He had somehow not anticipated having to explain this. ". . . Grinding. . . ."

And now the delight was plainly obvious on her face.

The snicker might've given it away too, even if it hadn't been. "Oh, I'm taking credit for that blush."

"I don't know what you're talking about," Duke said primly. His expression did not at all match his tone. "I'm just saying, I could probably make a dirty pun out of anything this week."

Did Octavia shift to walk a little closer to him just so she could reach up and poke him in the cheek with a single fingertip?

Absolutely!

"Only one of those statements sounds true."

Duke pressed a mock-offended hand to his chest. "Are you calling me a liar, Ms. kom Gonakru?"

It was entirely possible he'd forgotten she had an actual last name.

It was equally possible that Octavia and her myriad of identity issues did not mind that one bit.

"Yes," she said, and even nodded, complete with a small but smug smirk. "I am. Because you're a blusher."

"I am definitely not a blusher," Duke lied. ". . . I'll cop to being a liar, though."

That part helped his general rep, after all.

Octavia looked ahead again, and shrugged casually.

"But since you're not a blusher," she drawled idly, "I'm probably gonna keep a lot of things I might say today to myself. You know, since they're not going to have an effect..."

Duke snorted. "Sorry my hard, jaded exterior is going to ruin your plans."

Octavia shrugged again.

"Pretty sure it's you who should be sorry. But suit yourself, jaka."

"I usually do," Duke said (lying again). "You know, you could just try to prove me wrong."

"Eh."

That light little sound managed to be kind of a lie, as well. But come on, where was the fun in trying right now when she could instead wait for an opportune moment later?

So she pointed up ahead. "We're coming up on the stream."

"With the furry fish," Duke said.

And wished his brain hadn't tried to turn that one dirty.

Octavia's didn't, thankfully. "Mmhm," she said. "Figured somewhere near it could be nice. Not right by it, but... in the general area."

"I bow to your authority, gona," Duke said. "You have way more experience out here than I do."

"Bow, huh?"

Sure, that she decided to make sound a little dirty. Or maybe that was just her low rasp doing its own thing?

"Anyway," she added, "I bring my experience with me on this trip, and you bring yours, and those -- what's that word? Complement each other." Another light shrug. "That's why we're such a great team."

"Bow," Duke confirmed, and yeah, he was definitely putting a little extra innuendo into that single syllable. "And we do, don't we?"

After his argument with Rey yesterday, being on the same page with her was a relief as well as a pleasure.

Octavia threw a little smirk his way, which probably confirmed her own shades of innuendo had been fully on purpose, too.

"We do," she said, her gaze back on the trees. There should be a small clearing somewhere around here... "I mean, I would go as far as saying you fit me."
