As tempting as it was to just stay in their little vacation bubble at sea, Duke and Octavia did have things to do back in Fandom now that the school break was over, so the Cape Rouge chugged back into port in the late afternoon to dock at her usual slip.

It was immediately beset by porgs.

"Alright, alright," Duke said, a laugh underlining the exaggerated annoyed tone of his voice. "I know, I know, how dare I exile you from your homes. I'm a cruel, cruel man."

Octavia snorted. "Didn't know Maine was supposed to be that bad a place."

Though to be fair, she had gotten arrested there.

"It's a state composed mostly of moose, flannel and Subarus," Lucifer pointed out. "...Actually, that was probably soothing for you, wasn't it?"

Octavia's dry look was maybe a little soft around the edges. If you knew how to look.

"Look who's learning," she rasped. "Yeah, I liked it."

It was amazing she didn't own anything flannel yet, actually. Especially with how much grunge she listened to.

Lucifer made an amused, if despairing, noise. "Of course you did."

The irritating thing was that that somehow made him like her more. "Ate plenty of lobster?"

Octavia shrugged. "Not really. I like a nice burger." In a diner context. Which was not the only environment they'd eaten in, no. "And I guess lobster's not really much of a camping food."

That's right, not only had they gone to Maine but also gone camping on a small deserted island off the coast of Maine.

"It could be in Maine," Lucifer said. "I mean, going by reputation."

"Well, we didn't have any."

A beat.

"Maybe next time."

"What did you have on your camping trip?" Lucifer said, sitting down on the nearest horizontal surface.

Not that he cared about such lame details, or anything.

Octavia suspected as much.

Just like she suspected he really didn't mind listening to her anyway.

"Fish, mostly," she said. "Roasted on an open fire. Duke's been teaching me about fishing."

"Of course he has," Lucifer sighed, but he leaned forward anyway, a nonverbal prompt for her to keep talking.

He did shuck off his jacket, though, putting it down next to him, leaving him in his vest and button-up.

"You'd think I'd have learned that on the ground," Octavia continued, with a tiny shrug. "But I wasn't really where the fish were, and anyway... I was busy."

Being a warrior, letting other people figure out food.

"But it's nice," she added. "Feels good to catch what I eat. Feels right." As opposed to shopping at the grocery store, even though she visited T&C almost religiously on Wednesdays.

"Can't say I've ever been tempted," Lucifer said, which shouldn't have come as a surprise to her. "Did you catch anything particularly huge or amusing?"

"Nothing particularly, no," Octavia replied, her voice dropping back into a low rasp, even though she sounded faintly amused. "But enough for a few good meals."

"So next trip, cabin in the woods with nothing but a rifle and an axe to survive on?" Lucifer teased. "At least now I know who to bring with me if I ever find myself caught up even further away from civilization than here."

"I don't do guns," Octavia drawled. Other than that it sounded wonderful, though. Predictably. "But the only class I was ever in was Earth Skills, which you're probably lacking, so yeah."

(He looked so out of place, sitting here in his vest. But she found she kind of liked that.)

"Compared to my siblings, I do just fine, thank you," said Lucifer, grinning. (And out of place suited him, or at least clung to him like lint in so many places.) "You should watch my brother Amenadiel attempt to navigate a coffee shop."

Which explained why her actual modern day Earth skills were, in fact, much worse than Lucifer's.

"Bit useful when you're in the city, knowing what to order," Lucifer said. "Keeping your frappucinos from your lattes. And remembering that the barista doesn't want a real answer if she asks you how you're doing."

Octavia snorted, softly. "I spent most of the last couple of years with Magnus Burnsides, I've learned how to order at coffee places."

She paused for a thought.

"Although one of the baristas at the Perk hates me."

"I think they hate almost everybody," Lucifer offered. "It helps when you flirt with them."

Or, well, more than flirting.

Yeah, that was kind of the problem.

"He's jealous over Duke," Octavia replied in her perfect deadpan. Although she amended that after a beat with, "Also still upset about that one time I threw a knife in the shop."
