As tempting as it was to just stay in their little vacation bubble at sea, Duke and Octavia did have things to do back in Fandom now that the school break was over, so the Cape Rouge chugged back into port in the late afternoon to dock at her usual slip.

It was immediately beset by porgs.

"Alright, alright," Duke said, a laugh underlining the exaggerated annoyed tone of his voice. "I know, I know, how dare I exile you from your homes. I'm a cruel, cruel man."

"Lucifer!" Duke greeted. "Hang on, I saved you a can of beans."

Someone had ~~handwavily~~ heard all about Lucifer's opinion of his cooking, yes.

"Aw, you shouldn't have," Lucifer said, grin broad. "No, really, you shouldn't."

"Well, I can always whip up a discount tuna burger." No really, he'd heard all about Lucifer's comments on his cooking. Lucifer was lucky Duke didn't have a can of sardines on him to dramatically eat in front of him. "But the beans are really the stars of the show."

Normal people might have made some kind of sheepish apology at this point. Not so much Lucifer, who wore his cheerful snobbery on his sleeve so openly that Duke really shouldn't have been surprised.

"If I was that hungry, I would have left the island hours ago, darling," he said sunnily. "But welcome back to a place you won't have to punch anyone in the next twelve hours."

Well sure! But Duke was the sort who drank $300/bottle bourbon. At Lucifer's club. He had taste!

. . . And admittedly sometimes ended up living on canned beans or fish jerky if he was at sea long enough.

"I don't know, man, this is Fandom. We might get attacked by something." He didn't expect to, but he also hadn't expected to fight off animated action figures while in Haven for a few days. "It is nice to be somewhere I can walk around without getting stared at, though."

'Having taste' and 'being a Michelin-level chef' were two vastly different things. But admittedly Lucifer's snobbery was largely pinging off the whole 'small-town diner' thing, and less on Duke himself.

"I think you might be the most normal thing on this island, actually," he mused, walking along the side of the ship.

"That's depressing," Duke said, shaking his head. "You want to come aboard? I promise not to force any fish on you."

Were the barbs just flying past him, or was he ignoring them? Who knew. "You have to fill me in on the details of your trip that aren't punching-adjacent."

Duke just assumed Lucifer was ignoring them. He was the Devil, after all, obnoxiously ignoring things seemed right up his alley.

"Made front page news just by landing, got glared at for daring to go to a restaurant in my own hometown," Duke said. "Made friends with an old lady who helped bust Octavia out of jail. Pretty standard 'going home to visit' stuff, really."

"I do hate small towns," Lucifer said, moving up onto the deck. "How's Octavia's right hook?"

"A thing of beauty," Duke said, brightening just thinking about it. "It really is too bad it was so wasted on Nathan."

Lucifer may or may not remember that Nathan was the name of Duke's police officer ex.

... okay, he was entirely that oblivious. But not always about people he liked. Definitely not about people he liked who had told him things he had happily projected all over.

"Oh, really?" Lucifer said, smirking. "She neglected to mention that part."

"That she punched a cop?" Or, you know, that she'd punched his ex. "I mean, he did immediately arrest her, so maybe she wasn't too excited about bragging about that part."

"No, that she'd punched your obnoxious, small-minded ex," Lucifer happily clarified. "Well done, Octavia."

Duke chuckled. "Like I said, thing of beauty. Too bad he's also the Chief of Police's son." He shook his head. "She tried kicking him in the nuts too, apparently. That part I didn't get to see."

He'd been too busy freaking out at Gloria over Nathan arresting Octavia. Also, cleaning up after the animated action figure attack.

"Possibly unnecessary," Lucifer said, after a pause. "I'm torn."

"The man literally can't feel anything. It was definitely a wasted effort." Duke sighed. "Still would've been something to see, though."

"And how," Duke said. "Especially since the only reason she punched him was because he was making his usual ass of himself at me."

"So she punched him to defend your honor?" Lucifer said. "I love that girl." Beat. "I mean, not the way you do, just as a general thing."

Duke laughed. "Yeah man, I know." He'd even managed to say the L word out loud after busting her out of jail. Or -- the H word, technically, since it had been in Trig, but still. This was major progress for Duke. "So how was the Philippines? You spend the entire time in bed, or did you at least take some time to look around?"

"Please, I went out, I met people, I spent time on the beach, got plenty of massages, and even tried the wild water rides," Lucifer said, grinning. "Ended the whole thing on a foursome. I have no complaints."

"Oh man. I haven't had a good foursome in . . . ages." That was one major drawback to monogamy, right there. "You hit up any of the food carts? That part of the world has some of the best street food."

Lucifer looked squinty. "No," he said. "I went from the beach to the clubs to the fancy restaurants. Maybe next time?"

A beat.

"The foursome was excellent, though. Can't imagine giving that up."

... sure, the fact he had one real friend involved was probably the only thing that had kept it from feeling empty inside, but that was a depressing thought he was not going to waste time on lest it draw him to Coldplay again.

As a piano player, Lucifer especially had to be careful of such things. There was only so much piano based pop out there, after all!

"Yeah, it's . . . kind of weirdly okay," Duke said. "At least so far. I mean, this is my first real monogamous relationship since, like, high school. My relationship with my wife was pretty much entirely based on orgies." A shrug. "You know, and crime."

Duke and Evi were all class, really.
