The Cape Rouge, Port of Fandom, Monday afternoon

As tempting as it was to just stay in their little vacation bubble at sea, Duke and Octavia did have things to do back in Fandom now that the school break was over, so the Cape Rouge chugged back into port in the late afternoon to dock at her usual slip.

It was immediately beset by porgs.

"Alright, alright," Duke said, a laugh underlining the exaggerated annoyed tone of his voice. "I know, I know, how dare I exile you from your homes. I'm a cruel, cruel man."

It was a lot more than any of Duke's brothers ever did. But then, his family was pretty terrible all over.

Duke nodded to the guy walking up, a friendly smile on his face. "Hey man, how's it going?"

He had no idea who Bellamy was, yet. He was just a friendly guy.

Yeah, Bellamy had been a recluse for awhile but hey, maybe it was time to fix that. Besides, he wasn't used to letting Octavia go off with people that he didn't know so he had to make sure things were okay and that this person she'd left with wasn't some creep.

"It's going fine if my sister's okay," he answers.

Duke blinked. Then his eyes went wide. "Oh! You're Bellamy!" His smile got wider, if a bit more tense. "Yeah, man, Octavia's great. Come on aboard, I'll show you around."

Yes, he was a bit nervous. He'd never really done the whole "meet the family" thing before. He'd known Nathan's as long as Nathan had, and Evi never talked to hers. . . .

One corner of Bellamy's mouth lifts in a half smile. He's at least glad to know that this guy knows who he is even if they haven't officially met yet.

Bellamy tries to be the bigger man by offering his hand before stepping onboard.

"Yeah, that's me. Bellamy the brother." Who has a gun and would use if it need be.

Good to know! Duke also had a gun. Several, in fact.

There was some sort of deadly weapon tucked away within arm's reach of most places on his boat, actually.

Duke shook his hand with firm enthusiasm. (He tended to overdo the friendly when he got nervous.) "Nice to meet you. I'm Duke. The, uh. Snogon. Okteivia chich yu raun otaim." He frowned slightly, hoping he'd gotten that right. He hadn't tried to say "Octavia talks about you all the time" in Trig before.

Let's hope no one had to use their guns! Octavia would probably be mad.

"She taught you how to speak Trigedasleng?" Huh, he'd have to ask her about that. That was a pretty big thing if it was coming from her. "I barely know how to speak it so whatever you just said could mean anything and I'd just nod."

"Yeah, it's kind of how we first bonded, really." Duke shrugged, rubbing the back of his neck. "I'm good with languages, and it makes her happy, so. . . ."

Well, that was a really right thing to say. Bellamy nods.

"And that's the most important thing," he agrees. "Where'd you guys go anyway?"

"Up the coast to a town called Haven, in Maine," Duke said. "It's where I grew up, and I had a, uh." He cleared his throat, wondering how much Octavia had told her brother about him. "Delivery to make. It's a small town, so I figured it wouldn't be too overwhelming to her, and there's lots of wilderness around, so. We could pretend it was kind of Trikru North or whatever."

"Delivery?"

If he notices the small pause, he doesn't say anything. "And it went well considering you both came back in one piece?"

"Oh yeah, delivery went off without a hitch," Duke said, nodding. The delivery part itself had been practically boring. ~~It hadn't even rated a thread!~~ "Spent a couple days in town taking care of business, then we went camping. You know how your sister is, she's never happier then when there's no other people around for miles."

"Yeah, that's the truth," Bellamy said, not seeing anything wrong with this so far and he's really trying to find one but...

He's not. "Sounds like a good trip without any hitches at all."

"Nothing we couldn't handle," Duke agreed. Octavia had barely been arrested. She'd spent maybe an hour in a jail cell. Totally fine.

"Uh huh." Bellamy didn't know why but he felt like something wasn't being said here. He can't really outright accuse the guy, can he? "What did you have to handle?"

"Usual small town stuff," Duke said. "Small minded, nosy people, that sort of thing."

Like reporters. And cops.

"I've never really been in a small town before," he said, shaking his head. "Didn't really get that chance so I'm still learning what goes on in them."

"It's probably not too much different from the Ark or the Ground," Duke said. "Everyone knows everyone else and have since they were small, so everyone's all up in everyone else's business."

"Ah yes, one of my least favorite things about living around the same people," he said with a wince. "The more people that know your business, the more people want to put in an opinion about your business."

"Exactly. Now imagine how they'd react if you suddenly showed up again after being gone for a few years. We were basically under a microscope. Hence ditching out and going camping instead."

"Sounds like a fun time," Bellamy said before shaking his head. It did not sound like a fun time at all. "At least you were memorable enough to be remembered?"

Duke let out a rueful snort. "I do like to make an impression, yeah. You want a tour or anything? I gather you didn't see a lot of boats back home."

"I didn't," Bellamy agreed before nodding. "Yeah, sure, show me your boat. Let's see what it's like."

"Yeah man, right on." Duke smiled and looked around. "So this is the deck, sort of a social-slash-storage space. That up there is the wheelhouse, where all the controls are for when we're at sea. And down this way are the staterooms. The actual living space."

"So, you could live on this thing for awhile if you wanted to?" Bellamy guessed.

Duke let out a small laugh. “I’ve been living on her for twelve years, man. Even got a roommate. Tavi didn’t tell you?”
